… We should not be naïve and we must be able to distinguish in the midst of a multitude of obvious and feigned emergencies, we must be able to recognize the real emergency and help the most affected.

… It is better to err and give to ten who do not need it, than to refuse help to one real poor person. A nipper always finds an excuse, just so he doesn’t have to donate anything. And let us not be angry when love for the needy demands humility from us and brings with it humiliations: how often our help is only a drop in the ocean! How often can we help only much less than the supplicant needs. For some of them, we were perhaps the last hope.

…  Our limited possibilities and our helplessness will disappoint him, even if we explain everything to him in an appropriate form. We will hear bitter words about us, without adequate gratitude for what we were able to do. In such situations, one needs a great deal of understanding and must also try to love the needy – in this bitterness of theirs, which makes them even more miserable and unhappy.

„ … nemáme byť naivní a musíme vedieť rozlišovať uprostred množstva zjavných a predstieraných núdznych stavov, musíme vedieť spoznať skutočnú núdzu a tomu najviac postih­nutému pomôcť.

… Je lepšie mýliť sa a dať desiatim, ktorí to nepotrebujú, ako odmietnuť pomoc jednému skutočnému chudákovi.. Žgrloš si vždy nájde výhovorku, len aby nemusel nič darovať. A nehnevajme sa, keď láska k  núdznym od nás vyžaduje pokoru a prináša so sebou poníženia: ako často je naša pomoc iba ako kvapka v mori! Ako často môžeme pomôcť iba omnoho menej, ako prosebník potrebuje. Pre niektorých takých sme boli možno poslednou nádejou.

…  Naše ohraničené možnosti a naša bezmocnosť ho sklamú, aj keď mu všetko primeranou formou vysvetlíme. Budeme na našu adresu počuť horké slová, bez adekvátnej vďačnosti za to, čo sme boli v stave urobiť. V  takýchto situáciách potrebuje človek veľmi veľa pochopenia a musí sa aj potom snažiť núdznych milovať – v tejto ich zatrpknutosti, ktorá ich robí ešte biednejšími a nešťastnejšími.
